ChatGPT in Industrial Automation: A Practical AI Assistant for Engineers
AI chat tools are becoming a practical part of everyday engineering work. ChatGPT is not a replacement for a PLC programmer, maintenance technician or safety engineer, but it can help prepare information, structure a problem and shorten routine documentation work.
Where it can help
- Summarising shift notes, service reports and alarm histories.
- Preparing troubleshooting checklists from a clearly described fault.
- Explaining technical documentation in simpler language or translating it for an international team.
- Reviewing supplied CSV or spreadsheet exports to identify patterns, anomalies and questions for further investigation.
For data work, ChatGPT can analyse uploaded tables and create summaries or visualisations. The quality of the result depends on the context, definitions and time period included with the data.
A safe workflow
- Remove passwords, personal data, customer data and other confidential information before sharing material.
- State the machine type, controller version, operating conditions and the goal of the analysis.
- Ask for assumptions, limitations and a step-by-step proposal—not only a final answer.
- Check every recommendation against the current schematic, manufacturer documentation and applicable standards.
Important boundary
Never use an AI response as the sole basis for a safety function, electrical modification, machine restart or parameter change. Safety circuits, lockout procedures and final technical decisions remain the responsibility of qualified personnel.
Used this way, ChatGPT is most valuable as a fast first assistant: it helps turn raw information into a structured starting point, while the engineer remains in control.
